Anatomy of fat pads

Hoffa's fat pad:
Intracapsular and extrasynovial
Attached to tibial periosteum, intercondylar notch by infrapatellar synovial fold (plica ligamentum mucosum) and anterior meniscal horns
Supplied by branches of superior and inferior genicular arteries - two vertical arteris posterior to the patellar tendons and are interconnected by 2-3 horizontal arteries
Relatively avascular central zone
Rich nerve supply
Has superior and inferior recesses or clefts; superior is vertically oriented and inferior horizontally
Transverse ligament courses within the Hoffa's fat

Suprapatellar fat pad (quadriceps fat pad, anterior suprapatellar fat pad):
Between quadriceps tendon and suprapatellar recess

Prefemoral fat pad (posterior suprapatellar fat pad):
Between suprapatellar recess and femur
Posterior to suprapatellar fat pad
